Active Listening Skills – Techniques
- Pay attention. Give your full attention to the speaker. Active listening involves being fully present in the conversation. Avoiding distractions and focusing on the speaker can enhance comprehension and engagement.
- Show that you’re listening. Use nods, smiles, and other non-verbal cues to show engagement. These cues indicate that you are interested and attentive. Providing verbal affirmations like „I see” or „That makes sense” can also show active listening.
- Provide feedback. Summarize what the speaker has said and ask clarifying questions. Providing feedback shows that you have understood the message. Reflecting on the speaker’s points and asking open-ended questions can foster deeper understanding.
- Defer judgment. Avoid interrupting and wait until the speaker has finished before responding. This ensures that you fully understand the message before forming an opinion. Keeping an open mind and avoiding premature judgments can enhance active listening.
